Volunteer Hours Policy

As you know, volunteer efforts and fundraising on the part of all club members are essential to keep costs reasonable and to ensure opportunities for the youth we serve.  In previous years, the minimum volunteer hour per family requirement (30 for two parent families, 15 for one parent families and 15 for mini-mite skater only families) could be fulfilled by performing various duties for the club, some of which included helping to clean the Agri, helping with concessions, and working in the officials box during hockey games.  Unfortunately, a problem arose with the volunteer process in the 2010-11 hockey season.  Specifically, there was not sufficient volunteerism to keep the Agri clean on a weekly basis.  An example of one of the problems that occurred last year was that on the nights that certain club teams were scheduled to perform either a post-game clean or a heavy clean of the Agri, as few as 2 or 3 parents showed up to clean.  This resulted in the Agri being only partially cleaned at best.

In order to address this problem with cleaning the Agri, the board has negotiated with the WSC Hockey team to perform a substantial portion of the cleaning duties at the Agri during the upcoming season.  The result of these negotiations is an agreement between WBSC and WSC whereby WBSC has agreed to pay the WSC Hockey players a minimum wage to perform many of the cleaning duties at the Agri.  However, it must be noted that this agreement to clean the Agri will not relieve the club members of all cleaning duties.  Of note, there will be times when the WSC Hockey team will not be available and the club will have to perform the cleaning duties.  While we do not know all of the dates when the club will be responsible for cleaning the Agri this season, we do know at this time that the club will have to clean over WSC’s Christmas Break (Dec. 16 through January 2), the WBSC Mite Tourney, and the WBSC Squirt Tourney.

In order to pay the WSC Hockey team for such cleaning duties, the board recently approved amendments to the club’s volunteer and cleaning policies as follows: (1) implement a $75.00 per family cleaning fee that must be collected at the time of registration; (2) although the WSC Hockey team will perform many of the Agri cleaning duties, club members would still have to clean for WBSC/WHS home hockey tourneys and when the WSC hockey team is unavailable to clean the Agri; (3) the annual volunteer hour requirement will be reduced from 30 to 25 hours for two parent families with skaters above the Mini-Mite level (one parent families and families with only Mini-Mite skaters remains at 15 hours); and, (4) while a $300 deposit for volunteer hours will still be required from families with skaters above the Mini-Mite level (one parent families and families with only Mini-Mite skaters remains at $150.00), the failure to fulfill the minimum volunteer hour requirement will result in the forfeiture of the full deposit to the club.

As a result of the board’s recent action, the portions of the cleaning and volunteering policies that were changed are as follows:

Each family must:
            1.         Complete 25 hours of volunteer time (15 hours for one parent families and families with Mini-Mite skaters only).
            2.         Pay registration fees before their child(ren) can skate.
            3.         Pay a Cleaning Fee of $75.00 before their child(ren) can skate.
            3.         Fulfill their team’s requirements for working and cleaning at WBSC sponsored tournaments.
4.            Participate on other fundraising efforts and committees as needed.
5.            Write a check for $300.00(*) that is post-dated April 1, 2012, which the club will hold to ensure that the annual volunteer hour requirement for all families is met by March 31, 2012.  As is the case with the club’s annual skating fees, this check must be delivered to the club before their child(ren) can skate. At the end of the season, if a family meets their annual volunteer hour requirement of 25(*) hours, the $300.00(*) check will be returned to them.  If the annual service hour requirement is not met by a family, their $300.00(*) check will be cashed on or about April 1 and the $300.00(*) will be forfeited to the club for failing to complete the minimum requirement.  Families are no longer allowed to buy out their required minimum volunteer hours by submitting a payment of $300.00(*) prior to the start of the hockey season.

(*) for one parent families and families with only Mini-Mite skaters, the correct numbers are 15 volunteer hours and a $150.00 post-dated check.

A partial list of volunteer hours activities are as follows:

Cooking and Food Preparation for Concession Stand
                        Working Concession Stand
                        Cleaning as needed
Off Ice Official- (Working Scoring Box or Penalty Boxes)
                        Operating Zamboni
                        Other WBSC board approved activities

Thank you for all your support and help in providing the opportunity for the youth of our area to participate in hockey.  This could not happen without your help and support.
